Chapter Fourteen

“Alright, so the beginning of these lines marks where they constructed the ships, and the endpoints are where they ended up. But aside from our craft, none of these destinations correspond to any planets we’re familiar with. How is that possible? This thing lacks any visible propulsion system, and even if it did, crossing from one galaxy to another is deemed impossible,” Patrick mused aloud to the group.

Crystal responded succinctly, “They’re portals.”

“Portals, like teleporting?” Scott questioned with disbelief.

“Consider these places as other planets, worlds, dimensions—whatever you prefer. But the starting points on these charts aren’t the actual origins. Look,” Crystal said, shifting the glass to another starting point. A purple-hued background emerged in the looking glass, revealing five irregularly shaped rock formations, forming a circle in the purple dirt. No crafts or visible scaffolding were present. “They’re explorers. They locate these portals on other worlds or alternate realms, venturing from some distant starting point. There’s always a circle with five objects surrounding it. Perhaps they begin their journeys from their home world, discovering these unique locations throughout the universe and utilize them to traverse different realms. It seems more reasonable than the idea of the same beings inhabiting hundreds of thousands of planets or planes of existence.”

“Or,” Patrick interjected, “they aren’t explorers at all; they’re conquerors, populating hundreds of thousands of other planets.”

“Either way, they’re not using any means known to man,” Crystal concluded, her words hanging in the air, laden with the weight of an enigmatic truth.

During their contemplation, a suggestion bubbled to the surface as Scott broke the contemplative silence. “Crystal, have you tried focusing on the midpoint of one of these lines? It could reveal something more about these mysterious journeys.”

Intrigued by the idea, Crystal adjusted the looking glass to hover over the midpoint of a line. As she peered into the glass, a disconcerting void greeted her eyes. No celestial landscapes, no planets, just an abyss of darkness. She moved the glass along the line, yet the emptiness persisted, a stark departure from the vibrant scenes witnessed at the line’s endpoints.

Perplexed, Crystal shared her thoughts with the group. “If they were taking pictures along the way why would these lines be blank? Wouldn’t you think they would photograph the journey? Why would the entire journey be shrouded in blackness? Unless… They’re traveling through a portal.”

The group absorbed this revelation, the gravity of the implication sinking in. The looking glass, an artifact of unknown origin, hinted at a method of travel beyond comprehension. Crystal continued her exploration, guiding the glass along other lines, each revealing the same impenetrable darkness. The notion of a portal network connecting disparate points in the universe began to solidify.

“Think about it,” Crystal urged, her voice carrying a mix of excitement and trepidation. “If these beings are using portals, it explains the seemingly impossible traversals and the purpose behind these intricate lines on the charts. They aren’t merely observing; they’re navigating through these portals, leapfrogging across the cosmos.”

The room buzzed with a newfound energy as the group wrestled with the significance of Crystal’s discovery.
